MEMENTO MORI & FAUN
CIRQUE ROYAL – BRUSSELS
19, 20, 21 SEPTEMBER 2019
After the sold out performances of PUZ/ZLE in 2017, Belgium’s most loved and honored choreographer is finally coming back to Brussels.
This time, the programme includes two of his most iconic works, performed by Ballet Vlaanderen. This is a unique chance to get to know two different aspects of the master on one evening.
This Faun, for there have been so many fauns since the seminal piece by Nijinski, had a very specific point of departure: James O’Hara. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui had always found this young dancer to embody the duality in man, a natural presence of the animal within.
Memento Mori. “Remember you shall die.” This ancient old Latin expression is the guiding principle of choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s new piece. How does the concept of mortality influence one’s life? A question answered by investigating three stages of dying: the moments before, during and after death. On one hand, the mystery of death invokes great fears, on the other hand many hold a certain fascination for it. How do you live despite knowing that this life is brief and passing? And more importantly: what will you leave behind after you’ve died? Both from his own personal, intimate memory and his fascination for the death of deceased pop culture icons, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui enquires into what happens with the people left behind after someone they love has passed. Primarily, loss invokes a sense of being forsaken.
